Castle  Spring Term 2 2017      Castle

Our focus for this Spring half term will be Welsh Culture. We will be looking at inspirational Welsh people including Artists and Musicians, such as Tom Jones. We are also focusing on castles in Wales, looking at the main features of a castle. We had a brilliant trip on Tuesday 8th March to Caerphilly Castle, which we absolutely loved. It was so fun to see the weapons and climb to the top of the castle. Over the next few weeks we are going to be learning about clothes they wore inside a castle, and also the kinds of food they eat.

We will also be introducing and developing ‘The Power of Yet’ which encourages children to try their best and to not give up. We will be reading the book called ‘The Dot’ by Peter Reynolds to help us understand this.

We will be celebrating World Book Day on March 20th, which the children are very excited about.

Homework Challenges

Thinking Challenge

 White Hat

Use your white thinking hat to write down facts you know about Caerphilly Castle, or you could research facts about another Castle in Wales, e.g. Cardiff Castle.

Creative Challenge

 Green Hat

Use your green thinking hat to design your own castle out of different art materials. You could use paint, colouring pencils, or even recycled materials. Try and label the features of a castle, if you can remember them.

Cymraeg – Welsh                                                                                                                   We love learning Welsh in school and we are so glad we get to do it everyday for 30mins. This includes reading, writing, and speaking. We also love to sing songs in Welsh too. Recently we have been asking the question ‘Ble mae……?’ and learning to use prepositions for the answer e.g. Mae Coco ar y bocs (Coco is on the box). We also try our best to speak lots of Welsh in the classroom and around the school, so that we can impress the Welsh detectives.

Cerddoriaeth – Music

Every Wednesday afternoon we have our music lesson. We are continuing to do ‘Charanga’ with Mrs Webb from Upbeat, every other week. We have been looking at different genres of music, e.g. Blues and listening to music by BB King. We are starting to get better at playing the Glockenspiels, and are learning to stay in time to the rhythm. We also have singing practice every Tuesday, where we are practising and learning new songs for Easter.

Addysg Gorfforol – P.E

Our P.E day is on a Monday, and we are now able to get changed independently. Last term we focussed on Gymnastics, and this term are focus is on ball skills. We are learning how to catch and throw a ball at different distances. We loved watching the Year 2’s take part in the Welsh country dancing in the Eisteddfod, so we are going to be learning country dancing at the end of this half term.

Ysgol Coedwig – Forest School

Thursday afternoons are our Forest School lessons. In Science we have been learning about our 5 senses, so we thought we’d use them outside too. We have been working in groups to write down what we can see, feel and hear in the outdoors. We have also been focusing on photography and have been learning how to take natural photos (we definitely have some future photographers in Amber class). Our next step is to learn how to change the pictures into black and white.

ICT

This Spring term we have been learning how to write and send emails, as well as add photo and document attachments. We have been remembering out Internet Safety rules at all times. During Literacy lessons we are using Reading Eggs to develop reading and writing skills, and during Maths lessons we are exploring Mathletics. In the afternoons, we are using ‘Purple Mash’ to use a programme called ‘2Type’, as well as many more.
