                      Spring Term 2 - 2017

Catrin Williams

Our focus for this spring half term will be Wales. We will be looking at inspirational Welsh people including Women and Artists such as Catrin Williams, who creates works using oil paints, inks and mixed-media and celebrates the role of women in Wales. We will also be introducing and developing ‘The Power of Yet’ which encourages children to try new things and not to give up and to hopefully teach them to understand that although they might feel like they cannot do certain things, it only means that they can’t do it “yet”.

We will be celebrating World Book Day and also working on our competition entries for our Eisteddfod. Alongside these learning experiences, the children’s ideas will be considered as and when they arise, During the first few days in Nursery this term, the children showed a growing interest in building bridges and castles, so this will be woven through our learning for the first couple of weeks. Here are their ideas...

Thinking Challenge:

Watch the Story “The Three Billy Goats Gruff”

Use your  Reverse  to answer the following question.

Name 5 things that you CANNOT build a bridge from?

Think about the benefits of bridges

What are the good things about bridges?

What are your favoutite bridges in Newport?

Creative challenge: look at these ideas!

Can you use recycled materials to create a castle or bridge? You can use any material you like. You could even paint it afterwards!

This term we we will be developing our mouse control skills while using 2paint on Purple Mash.  We will also be practising to move the Beebots around our classroom.

We will also be learning how to take photographs within the school.

We continue to follow our Fflic a Fflac programme which we thoroughly enjoy!    Flic And Flac

We will be learning to ask:

Ble mae..?   Where’s..?

Sut wyt ti?   How are you?

Pa liw?          Which colour?

Amser snac / Ga i..?           Snack time / May I have..?

Sawl un?      How many?

We are becoming confident to ask to use the toilet in Welsh “ga i fynf i toiled?”

We are beginning to develop our oracy skills in Welsh and have set up a Welsh table in our classroom where we ask each other questions.

We will continue to use percussion instruments to play along with songs and music. We will be using music to differentiate between different types of sounds and pitches. We will also focus on keeping a steady beat.

In PE lessons this term we will be focusing on dance, our main target is to continue to listen carefully to and follow instructions during our dance sessions lessons.  We will also be developing our balancing skills outdoors using obstacle courses and the balance board. This is also great for our gross motor control!

In our Discovery Room we are learning about different materials and which ones are the best for different tasks – like building a bridge or keeping us dry. The children are able to follow their own interests in Nursery and we try to provide the opportunities for them to explore their ideas. Alongside these ideas the children will be developing their shape space and measure skills and physical development such as scissor skills. Also they will be using their creativity to enhance the room with paintings, drawings, collages, and 3d items; which they can then use in their role play.

In Forest School we will be investigating living things - such as plants, trees and animals. We will be looking out for new plants and the changes in colour as spring approaches. We will measure the new plants and check on their growth. We will also be re-enacting traditional stories, such as Red Riding Hood and The Gingerbread Man out in the forest.

In Dosbarth Little Gems, the children are in charge of what they want to learn about. All their ideas are valued and explored, so they are fully engaged in the learning process and therefore learn with enjoyment and enthusiasm.
